The Grand Mother and the Youthful Rascals

One day some of the village youths came to visit Osabu. They wanted to talk to her about setting fire to the woods around her house in order to hunt the deer and pigs that would be scared out by the fire. "Osabu, let us hunt in the woods around your house." they said.

But Osabu answered them, "My granddaughter and I are poor and we depend on the foxtail millet that grows on the mountain and in the woods. If I let you burn and hunt on the mountain then I will not be able to get any more foxtail millet." But the youth said to her, "Osabu, we will take many deer and wild boar, and we will give the heads to you. You will eat meat everyday!" At last the village youths were able to convince Osabu to let them hunt on her land.
